DRAWING CLASSES
Weekly schedule and openings
FOR AGES 5 TO ADULT — Our weekly classes are modeled after our regular trimester based drawing classes. The only difference is that with summer being too short to fit in a full trimester, we cut our regular program in half—to six instead of twelve classes, and mix up the projects so they're a little bit lighter and more fun. The classes are still structured with learning objectives and we want students to develop new skills but we also want them to enjoy themselves and not be stressed by complex or overly challenging projects. You can see the weekly schedule of drawing classes here.
THE TABLE BELOW represents the status for the SUMMER 2010 DRAWING CLASS session which begins Monday, June 28th. You can see a description of any class by clicking on the class title or scrolling down the page. You can register online immediately via our Summer registration page, plus you can select up to three different classes during the week if you have flexibility and wish to improve your chances of getting in. We will always offer you your first choice if it is available. If you have questions please check our general FAQ, registration FAQ or policy pages for information that may answer your questions. You are also welcome to email us or call the studio at 978-266-1600.
Check out our STUDIOWORKS 4-DAY PROGRAMS SCHEDULE too.
SUMMER SESSION RUNS FROM: MONDAY, June 28 — THURSDAY, August 5.
NOTE: All summer classes have been closed as of July 16th. We are now halfway through our six class summer session and it is too disruptive to add new students this late in the session. Our Fall class schedule will be posted online on August 1st. The Fall registration page will also be active at that time as well.

BEGINNERS
(ages 5 THROUGH 6) — Six 1 hour classes — $120
JUNE 28 TO AUG 5
Offers age appropriate projects that are designed to help children learn "how to see" what they wish to draw. Studio environment is managed so children learn to accept challenges, solve problems and judge their own artwork without debilitating self-criticism. Materials used are primarily markers, pastels and watercolor paint. Many children are ready to begin drawing with this kind of focus by the age of 5, however no two children are alike and it's not possible to predict how any one child will respond. We do not accept registrations for children under the age of 5 without verbal confirmation from the ActonArt Program Director. Please call 978-266-1600 for more information. Placement of children in the appropriate class level is subject to Director's recommendation.
BASIC DRAWING
(ages 6 T0 9) — Six 1 hour classes — $120
JUNE 28 TO AUG 5
Introduces students to a structured drawing process which includes learning how to "see to draw," plan and follow through. The class projects are designed to guide students toward developing drawing skills while encouraging personal expression and creativity. While many of the projects are guided, each student is allowed to work with his or her own vision and produce a unique finished piece. As in all ActonArt classes there is no critique, commentary or competition and students are encouraged to assess their own work. In this safe environment students learn that they can follow their instincts, explore new ideas and take chances in their work without fear of criticism.Placement of children in the appropriate class level is subject to Director's recommendation. Children under the age of six should NOT be registered in Basic drawig classes without permission from the director.

DRAWING FOR ADULTS
(adults) — Six 1.5 hour classes — $156
JUNE 28 TO AUG 5
Since drawing has not been widely taught in the U.S. since the 1800's most adults today have never received any drawing instruction whatsoever. As a result, many adults feel they've missed out on something, and they want a second chance. The good news is, it's never too late. Even though you may feel yourself to be a complete beginner, your life- experiences and observations have helped you develop visual skills and creative instincts that children cannot yet have. To a child, who is a true beginner, everything is new. Adults however, have far more sophisticated mental processes and are typically capable of working at the Intermediate level. That may sound intimidating, but if you can write your name in script, color inside the lines and predict what color wiil be produced when you mix red and blue together, you're no beginner! Basic Drawing for Adults will focus primarily on core drawing skills. We will cover the use of line (edges), tone (light and shadow), spaces (negative and positive), relationships (perspective, proportion, etc.) and color.
MANGA DRAWING
• Manga 1 Drawing — For ages 10 and Up—Six 1 Hour classes — $120
• Manga 2 Drawing — For ages 12 and Up —Six 1.5 Hour classes — $156
JUNE 28 TO AUG 5
MANGA 1 DRAWING, will be modeled after Shoujo/Shonen style manga which is frequently favored by pre-teens and teenagers alike. These characters are much more lifelike in appearance and behavior although there are many story lines that feature supernatural people and creatures. Gender becomes much more of a factor at this level since boys are attracted to Shonen (competition, sports, warfare, supernatural characters, etc.) stories, and girls favor Shoujo (socialization, relationships, dating, fashion, etc.) stories. The literal translation of Shonen is "boy" and Shoujo is "young girl". Manga 1 will be held on Monday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
MANGA 2 DRAWING is a follow-up class to MANGA 1. Students will have to take MANGA 1 previously or submit samples of their artwork to join this class. The class will assume prior skills and develop more sophisticated aspects of drawing, plus use advanced techniques that require more time to complete. Manga 2 classes may also be theme oriented, using existing stories such as Alice in Wonderland, or The Wizard of Oz, etc. as opportunities to create supporting Manga illustrations. New students who wish to join this class-level will need to submit samples prior to placement. Contact John Goodnough at 978-266-1600 to learn how to proceed. Manga 2 is held on Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
* Ages represent minimum recommended ages and average ranges of students in classes. If a minimum age is set it is noted in the class description. Click the class title to read class descriptions.
