Mixed Media & Painting is a unique class that offers an exploratory experience for students. Projects are intended to provide opportunities for students to use a variety of materials and learn or experiment with ways of using them. At the same time students are encouraged to follow their own creative interests regarding subject matter and interpretation.
During the last 2 years of Mixed Media classes students worked with materials and techniques such as:
- Embossed metal foil (bas reliefs)
- Cast paper on block prints (hand-made paper reliefs)
- Cellulose/paper/plaster casting (hand made, hand painted plates)
- Hand painted silk scarves
- Soapstone carving
- Screen printing
- Soft pastel combined with watercolor painting
- Glue-line paintings
- Dimensional paper sculpture
- Oil painting (water soluable paint)
- Acrylic painting & murals on fiberboard
- Watercolor and gouache painting
- Airbrush painting
- Pallette knife painting
- And even more!
Because students work on various projects simultaneously they must be able to work independently. Students should expect to use a variety of resource materials (wood, canvas, paint, paper, plaster, metal foil, fiberglass screen, etc.) tools and techniques including some that they may develop on their own. Projects will frequently require multiple weeks to complete. This is NOT a drawing class and there will be no planned instruction as it is expected that students can already draw well enough to participate.
If you have a student who loves art and has the interest and ability to expand their own creative boundaries they will love Mixed Media.

This class is similar to Drawing 2 for Adults in that it presents core skill drawing projects which are then used as starting points for painting. We will work on subjects that suit the tastes of the participants. The interim drawings will be used as the starting point for paintings in either watercolor, acrylic or oil paint. Basic to intermediate techniques will be taught for both drawing and painting. The class will choose to sample a variety of subjects and painting methods or focus on one or two completed pieces which allow for more more fully developed, hands-on learning experiences.
Students can choose a six or twelve class schedule.
• 6- class schedule presents only the instructed projects so students can work on painting outside of class time.
• 12-class schedule provides all the instructed projects plus 6 days of studio time and materials to work with instructor assistance on projects. All materials are provided for IN-STUDIO use. We cannot provide materials for take-home work outside of class.

This class does NOT follow our regular trimester schedule. It will meet only 8 times since most adults cannot commit large blocks of time to evening activities. A minimum of 5 registered students will be needed for the class to be held. All registered students will receive updates on the status of the class as we approach the start date. If the class is canceled due to inadequate enrollment, complete refunds will be provided to anyone who has registered and paid.
Since drawing has not been widely taught in the U.S. since the 1800's most adults today have never received any drawing instruction whatsoever. As a result, many adults feel they've missed out on something, and they want a second chance. The good news is, it's never too late. Even though you may feel yourself to be a complete beginner, your life- experiences and observations have helped you develop visual skills and creative instincts that children cannot yet have. To a child, who is a true beginner, everything is new. Adults however, have far more sophisticated mental processes and are typically capable of working at the Intermediate level. That may sound intimidating, but if you can write your name in script, color inside the lines and predict what color will be produced when you mix red and blue together, you're no beginner!
Drawing 2 for Adults will focus primarily on core drawing skills. We will cover the use of line (edges), tone (light and shadow), spaces (negative and positive), relationships (perspective, proportion, etc.) and color. In addition, members of the class will be asked to provide input regarding their interests to learn specific objectives.
