Beginners / Basic A
Beginners / Basic-A Level Video Class — Tree Frog
Instructor — Roxanne Vanslette
Download the reference image here and print a copy if you wish.
This project is a process drawing. It designed to help 5 to 6.5 year old BEGINNER students experience choosing a "path" or sequence through the drawing which produces more proportional and accurate results. The youngest students cannot do this by themselves but the simple act of following the process as led by the instructor helps students begin to think in a similar fashion. And on top of all that, the Tree Frog is a really fun drawing!
Students should watch a portion of the video and then pause the playback and spend time drawing. Upon completing the next steps in the sequence, UN-pause and watch another sequence of steps, then repeat the process. Follow this "watch then draw" alternating cycle all the way through the drawing.

Basic
Basic A+ or B Level Video Class — Meerkat
Instructor — John Goodnough

The Meerkat project is a very symmetrical image to draw. Developing an awareness of symmetry is a useful skill since it takes advantage of the brains natural ability to recognize patterns. The Meerkat drawing also focuses on light and shadow, as well as texture. We think if this project as simple enough for many Basic-A students (but not all) yet complicated enough for Basic B students to still be challenged.
Students should watch a portion of the video and then pause the playback and spend time drawing. Upon completing the next steps in the sequence, UN-pause and watch another sequence of steps, then repeat the process. Follow this "watch then draw" alternating cycle all the way through the drawing.

Black Cat - Neg. Space — Intermediate-A level
Instructor — John Goodnough
Download the reference image here and print a copy if you wish.
AN INTERMEDIATE-A LEVEL project done as a pure negative space drawing. It is designed to help students begin seeing how negative space relates to the positive spaces we focus on when drawing. The way the drawing is sequenced also shows how our normal perceptions of the "right starting point" while important, are not always as crucial as we think.

Intermediate #2
Intermediate A Level Video Class — Odie the Dog
Instructor — Roxanne Vanslette
Download the reference image here and print a copy if you wish.
BASIC B to INTERMEDIATE A LEVEL Cartoon characters present a different set of challenges to students since much greater accuracy is required to ensure that they look "right". Despite a general perception that cartoons are easier to draw, they are in fact much more complex than many general subjects. As a result students drawing Odie should be prepared to pay close attention and follow the instructions carefully.
Roxanne Vanslette presents this project drawing. This video shows the basic line drawing, retracing the drawing to eliminate loose lines, coloring with markers and final re-inking of outlines.
Students should watch a portion of the video and then pause the playback and spend time drawing. Upon completing the next steps in the sequence, UN-pause and watch another sequence of steps, then repeat the process. Follow this "watch then draw" alternating cycle all the way through the drawing.

Manga
Manga Drawing Video Class — Introduction
Instructor — Roxanne Vanslette
MANGA 1 OR 2 LEVEL This project is a basic intro drawing that covers all the "core skills" students need to work on for Manga character faces. Roxanne begins with building a face on a "skeleton" and developing eyes, facial features and hair. The image is transferred from the original paper to marker paper and retraced. Then skin and eye color are added with Copic markers. Finally the character is outlined and hair color is laid in and blended. Students can adapt this project to any kind of character they wish...male, female, young, old, etc.
Students should watch a portion of the video and then pause the playback and spend time drawing. Upon completing the next steps in the sequence, UN-pause and watch another sequence of steps, then repeat the process. Follow this "watch then draw" alternating cycle all the way through the drawing.
